DEFER   従う

To defer to someONE is to let them make a decision and to agree to follow it; for example, because they have more experience or expertise.

To defer to someTHING – a decision, someone's judgment, etc. – is to accept and follow it.

defer を人に対して使う場合、例えば経験や専門知識が豊富であるという理由などで、誰かに決定を任せて、自分はそれに従うことに同意する、という意味になります。

defer を決定や人の判断などに対して使う場合、それを受け入れて従う、という意味になります。
